The Andover Volunteer Fire department was organized sometime in the early 1900's. On October 30, 1890 Andover had it's first big fire. It burned the North side of the square. With no equipment here, help came from Jefferson, they had a hand pumper which was rushed here by rail. Andover then purchased an old steam engine which was operated by John Sargent, and wells and cisterns were dug for fire protection. In the early 1900's city water was installed so a hose was purchased for fighting fires. It was at this time that the fire department was organized. In 1932 one fire truck was purchased. A $22,000 fire hall was built in 1952 and more equipment purchased. In 1955 was the Andover fire disaster, when Isaly's and surrounding buildings burned. The fire department exists financially on income from public donations, fundraisers, and contracts from Andover Village, Andover Township, Richmond, and Williamsfield.
